Rm 6 Fair Art

This term we have used dandelions as our subject for art.  We have learnt how to draw dandelions and turned our favourite pencil drawing into a card.  We have painted dandelions using paintbrushes, dish brushes and even some thumb prints.  Dandelions was also our subject for our canvas that will be sold at the Allenton School Fair next weekend.  After several practice ones, the class voted on what they liked best and then we got busy painting.  The children all had a turn painting parts of the canvas and their thumb prints make up the dandelion head.  We are mighty proud of our effort and hope it raises lots of money for our school.

Talented Artists

As part of our learning activities for Samoan Language Week, we looked at how Samoan Siapo are traditionally made.  We looked at and discussed lots of the patterns and designs that are used.  Using these geometric designs and bright colours we created our own art work.  It is on the board at the back of the hall, so next time you are there, make sure you check it out.

Samoan Language Week 2

Here are links to some traditional Samoan legends.

How Fire Came to Samoa

The Magic Seashell

Why do we learn other languages and cultures?

“By learning an additional language and its related culture(s), students come to appreciate that languages and cultures are systems that are organised and used in particular ways to achieve meaning. Learning a new language extends students’ linguistic and cultural understanding and their ability to interact appropriately with other speakers ... Through such interaction, students acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes that equip them for living in a world of diverse peoples, languages, and cultures.”

Samoan Language Week 1

To celebrate Samoan Language Week, we are learning some Samoan songs.  We know that music is a way that cultures are shown or expressed.
